Practical information

Plan your visit

New Limerick is easier to reach than it looks, and it rewards a little preparation. Here is the driving and air picture, what each season actually feels like, and a single-page reference for the town, county and state services people ask about most.

Getting here

By road and by air

I‑95 runs through the town, and the international border is fifteen minutes south. That makes New Limerick an easy stop on any northern Maine route.

By car

Interstate 95

I‑95 passes directly through New Limerick. Houlton’s interchange is about seven miles south, and Presque Isle is roughly forty minutes further south. Maine Route 2 runs east–west through the town, and County Road serves the village centre.

Border crossing into New Brunswick at Houlton–Woodstock, ~15 min south.

By air

Presque Isle International (PQI)

The nearest commercial airport, with scheduled service to Boston Logan and seasonal routes elsewhere. It is about forty minutes south of New Limerick. Bangor International (BGR) is the next-closest option, roughly two hours away.

By rail

No passenger service

There is no passenger rail in northern Maine today. The Aroostook Valley Railroad — the electric interurban that shaped this region — closed in 1996, and freight still moves over the old corridor.

On foot

Crescent Mountain

The one walk worth planning around: the Crescent Mountain trail network on the south shore of Nickerson Lake. It is reached by boat, or on snowshoes across the ice in winter.

When to visit

Four seasons, very different

New Limerick has a humid continental climate — warm, occasionally humid summers and cold, sometimes severely cold winters. Both ends of the year are worth the trip.

Spring · April – May

Thaw and canoe season

The ice comes off Nickerson Lake in late April, the Meduxnekeag River Canoe Race is run from this town down to Houlton, and the paddles come out.

Roads are soft in April. Allow extra time.

Summer · June – August

Lake season

Swimming, boating, fishing, golf at twilight, and long light well past nine in the evening. Both county fairs fall inside this window.

Blackflies peak in late June and early July.

Autumn · September – October

Harvest and colour

Potato fields full of machinery, then the fastest foliage change in the state — the North Woods turn first, the farmland follows.

Peak colour late September into early October.

Winter · November – March

Snow season

Deep snow, groomed snowmobile corridors, cross-country skiing, and a frozen lake you can cross on skis. Aroostook County records some of the coldest readings in the populated United States.

Carry a winter kit — blankets, a scraper, a full tank.

What to bring

Always
A paper map as backup, a full tank of fuel, a charged phone, a first-aid kit, and more warm layers than you think you need — the temperature in Aroostook County changes fast once the sun goes down.

In summer
Insect repellent and a head net for blackflies, tick checks every day, swimwear, and a rain jacket that is not a novelty — afternoon showers are routine.

In winter
Insulated boots, a charged battery bank, a snow shovel, and a winter car kit. Register your snowmobile with Maine IFW before you ride.

Town, county & state resources

Official town, county and state contacts are listed first. The last group is different: those are independent guides to the county, published separately from this site — not government services, and labelled as such. Hours and procedures change, so call ahead where it matters.

A note on the last group. The Aroostook County events calendar and the Aroostook.ME travel guide are independent resources, not county government services — they are separate guides to the county, made by the same people who make this site. Before you rely on anything here

This table is a shortcut, not an authority. Office hours, meeting dates, licence rules and fees are set by the town, the county and the state — and they change.

For anything that matters — a vital record, a tax question, a licence deadline, a road closure — call the town office directly on (207) 532-3303.

Road and seasonal notes

  • Winter driving means snow tires, a scraper and a full tank. County roads are plowed but not always cleared as fast as the highway.
  • Spring mud season slows everything down, especially on unmaintained roads.
  • Cell coverage is good along I‑95 and in Houlton, and weak on the township roads north of the lake.
  • Fire bans are common in the northern woods in midsummer. Check before lighting anything.
  • Many rural services — fuel, repair, food — keep short hours or close for a meal. Call first.
